Welcome to Social IPO
Helping Angels profitably fund social
enterprises....
Social IPO has been set up to
investigate the potential for finding new source of social enterprise funding from Angel equity
investors.
A Surrey based telephone marketing
social enterprise received a £292,500 government employment grant for 45 people, as well as £500,000 and £350,000 from social funds. The
management have invested £150,000 and still retain 51% of the
company. In the current financial climate, it would be
hard to find funding at this level for a start up.
The Bridges Social Entrepreneurs Fund
has raised £9 million. The Big Issue Fund aim to raise £10 million for social enterprise investments. The
governments Big Society programme will release many £ millions into the sector. James Caan (the TV Dragon)
has recently become Chairman of the Big Issue. Coutts Bank and several other banks have specialist client advisors
for philanthropic investments.
By looking at the funding of social
enterprises, from an Angel investors’ point of view, we will be able to see the strengths and weaknesses of funding
the Third Sector.
With the eventual aim of taking a
social enterprise onto a UK small cap market.
Several USA social enterprises have
undertaken IPO’s to raise funding. Most have been private issue of blocks of equity for a fixed price. As these
were not quoted on a recognised market they could not easily be traded.
As local/national government grant
funding is reduced and trading income becomes harder to achieve, social enterprises are looking for new investment.
Social IPO have set up a specialist business plan programme to help them understand what Angels and social funds
are looking for.
We are organizing a one day event, in October, to discuss the problems and opportunities of social enterprise
investment. By bringing experts, sophisticated investors and social enterprises together we hope to take away
some of the ambiguity surrounding the sector.
